Min...thinking it odd and thinking it's news are different.
And basing your arguments on how long you were in is as fallacious as basing arguments on how long you've been out. I've been out longer than you, so have my views on the WTS been affected by that span of time? Yes. When I'd recently departed, I felt more like you seem to about many issues, and now I seem to agree with you less...but that is irrelevant to the validity of any argument.

we have all read and watched so many of the child abuse / sexual abuse scandals, and it makes us all sick to our stomachs, i want to touch on a different kind of abuse, i am not trying to draw a parellel between child abuse and being abused.
the abuse i am talking about is just as bad but so different.
i remember growing up a jw, basically having no choice, whether i wanted to go to the meetings or in service, and i always resented this in my parents.
No, that was how they got me to eat veggies (semi-seriously).
Mine was pretty much guilt, not overt punishment. Pressure and manipulation, but it worked, so the rest wasn't needed... I was a "good kid".

i have a question, though, if the society is not paying the governing body, or other "big wigs" in ny large salaries, what would be the motivating factor for the society to continue to exist?
i am not saying that money is everything, but if none of the money is going into pockets, then the society must really feel that they are god's chosen channel, or something to that effect.
If the GB resigned, replacements would be found.
We've read about this during WWII, when the less-than-magnificent seven trudged off to make license plates.
However, I suspect that if a large enough disaster befell HQ, the org could fraction. Not that I am wishing anything on innocent people... but we're all thinking bigger in our disasters the past few years.

The quote above is from Scully's fine post of a translated article. Kropfeld's final quote here seems to mirror my feelings about why people come, and stay, in the WTS.
Speaking personally, I find that life is far more complex than I was raised to believe. I regularly have to resolve paradoxes, take positions with incomplete data, and flexibly deal with changing realities - none of which seem to get taught to JW kids :) Seems as if many adult converts (such as dear old Ma) had traumatic childhoods, and believing that the WTS has the answers is easier than working through the past and growing up.

Well, it's not as far along as the trip to Bethel, but I'll post a few over the next week or so...
about the only model that i've found that helps define the experience of being born in the truth (bitt), is one used in studies on addiction.
basically, that model says that people who are addicts form maladaptive relationships with things, experiences, and i'd argue ideologies as well, in a vain attempt to achieve "closeness".
of course real "closeness" or "psychic validation" as i prefer to think about it, is only truly achieved during and after the interactions between two mutually accepting and non-judging people who possess intimate knowledge of one another; starting with one's primary caregivers... or parents.

I came across BPD and Linehan's dialectical therapy recently while dealing with a family issue. While researching it, I was amazed at the parallels that I saw with how Witnesses in general, and especially female witnesses, are treated, and how some of them react to it emotionally.
I expecially like how Linehan has incorporated "eastern" mindfulness skills. This detachment from reality and from the moment seems to be very common in the west, and Witnesses I would suspect are even worse than average.

There are no stupid questions here in Oregon, only stupid people. JK.
There may not be huge salaries, but ther are perks and such that the old duffers couldn't earn in the real world. (Akroyd to Murray, Ghostbusters: "You've never been in the private sector, Veenkman! I have! They expect results!" )
Additionally, they get the huge ego boost of being the HNIC's for the whole Society. Once you convince yourself that God talks to you, even if it's just through a bowl of Alpha-Bits, you can convince yourself of anything.

As you've probably divined by now, I don't have too many problems disclosing that sort of stuff. (It's all going into my screenplay - I decided if I was going to live a romantic comedy, I was going to write a romantic comedy).
